The Historical Synthesis of the
 SPE Italian Section

by Francesco Guidi

How its birth came about
Until the mid 80's, SPE presence in Italy was limited to few members of SPE International, working for international oil and service companies operating in our country. At that time, there was no SPE section in Italy to coordinate their activities.
Despite the fact that in Italy the hydrocarbon upstream has always been intense, even before the First World War.
As a matter of fact, the first well drilled in Italy with mechanical means was in 1863 (only 4 years after the well drilled in the United States by col. Drake) in Tocco Casauria (Pescara) in the center of Italy, Abruzzo.
Petroleum operations grew strongly in Italy during the Second World War, when AGIP started to use the reflection seismic survey in 1940. This was the first application in Western Europe, and was carried out with an American seismic company (Western Geophysical). Thanks to this survey, AGIP struck in 1944 near Milan, the first large gas field in Western Europe: Caviaga with 12 billion cubic meters of reserve.
Since then, the Italian upstream petroleum industry grew. At present gas production is 15 billion cubic meter per year, after having reached a peak in 1995 of 20 billion cubic meter.
Oil production is currently 120,000 b/d and there are good possibilities to find more oil and gas.
Proven reserves in Italy are 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) and there is the possibility to find an additional 2 billion boe.
