is an addendum to the SPE Italian Section Bulletin. Its goal is to be a permanent reference for the expression and divulgation of the STYPED initiatives.

THE WAY AHEAD – How we are born..

The activities of the group of young professional within SPE Italian Section started with an initiative called "The Way Ahead". It was fall 1999. The inspiration for that came from Giovanni Paccaloni (appointed as 2005 SPE president), who gathered a group of motivated young people working in the industry to take on the challenge to create an innovative initiative that would target a group of potential SPE member that – he felt – SPE was not effectively attracting with the scheduled activities.

Now The Way Ahead” is the name of the SPE young professional international magazine, born in 2005, set up thanks to the support of the at that time in office SPE president Giovanni Paccaloni and to the active participation of two italian young professionals (Thomas Bruni and Loris Tealdi). In it, you will find items of particular interest to younger members of the industry, including articles on the finding your career path, improving key skills, and the roles of young professionals around the world.

 What is STYPED?

STYPED stands for Sponsor Team for Young Petroleum Engineers Development.

From 2005, STYPED is the name of the Young Professional Group of the SPE Italian Section. It can be considered the legitimate "son" of "The Way Ahead".

The name itself means the mission of this association: create events (regarding technical issue, soft skills development, sharing experience, networking..) for the professional growth and development of young resources within the Italian Oil Industry.

Who is STYPED?

STYPED is organized like the SPE Italian Section itself, with its own Board (even though participation was quite open and without formality) and with the mission to organize events (workshop, lectures, etc.) that would get the young professionals working in the Italian Oil Industry involved in SPE.

All young professionals of diverse company are not only welcome, but strongly encouraged to participate in all STYPED events and in their organization.

 

What STYPED does

Below, a brief description of our main initiatives we organize every year.

Our motto is: “Enjoy yourself but enrich your knowledge!”

§      STYPED JOURNAL: it has been thought as an addendum to the SPE bulletin (published every three months). Its goal is to be a permanent initiative for the expression and divulgation of the Young Professionals. Future STYPED initiatives, technical articles together with personal and professional experiences from young engineers are published there.  

§      CONTINUOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (CEP): a series of workshops and/or a cycle of lectures is structured as a regular program, the aiming at fulfilling specific requirements of young professionals. The main drivers of this program are the variety of subjects, and the best-in-class lecturers, that volunteered to participate to the CEP, offering their time and knowledge.   

§      CREATIVE WORKSHOP: introduced in 2003 it was a real breakpoint with respect to all the activities previously organized by STYPED. A maximum of 25 participants interact with each other for a full day in an informal and welcoming environment, such as a farm or a mountain house. Experienced HR professionals guide them through discussions, presentations, and role-plays on subjects such as team leading, self-motivation, and management styles.  

§      ANNUAL STYPED SOCIAL EVENT: it’s a party organized in a wonderful location in Milan, every year we choose a different one, because we want to be always original! Usually a really amazing night…A wonderful moment for socializing and creating networking. Everybody is welcome, either who already knows SPE and who is just arrived in the Oil and Gas Business. It’s a good opportunity to know the Italian SPE YP Group and sharing point of view and experiences. 

§      THE BEST PAPER AWARD: it is open to any student and young professional, working in an area related to the Italian Oil & Gas Industry. Papers are submitted to the Award Committee and, among all the papers received, three are selected for the final award. The awarding ceremony will take place during the annual SPE Christmas cheer every year in December, in order to make this award more visible also to the senior members. 

§       THE WORLD & YOUNG PROGRAM: it is meant to interact with all our young colleagues (maximum 35 year old) that are working abroad and are then enjoying different realities, fascinating experiences, and day-by-day issues. The goal of the W&Y Program is to travel all around the world together with our colleagues and to gather all the experiences in the form of short articles with pictures, to be published on the STYPED Journal. Are you part of Oil & Gas industry? Write a paper on a technical topic; it will be published on journal and perhaps you will be given a prize!
