THE WAY AHEAD

The activities of the group of young professional within SPE Italian Section started with an initiative called "The Way Ahead". It was fall 1999. The inspiration for that came from Giovanni Paccaloni (appointed as 2005 SPE president), who gathered a group of motivated young people working in the industry to take on the challenge to create an innovative initiative that would target a group of potential SPE member that – he felt – SPE was not effectively attracting with the scheduled activities. "The Way Ahead" was organized like the SPE Italian Section itself, with its own Board (even though participation was quite open and without formality) and with the mission to organize events (workshop, lectures, etc.) that would get the young professionals working in the Italian Oil Industry involved in SPE.

What is STYPED?
Despite the achievements of the initiative, it was felt that more could be done with a proper financial support. That was the idea behind STYPED (that can be considered the legitimate "son" of "The Way Ahead"): the Sponsor Team for Young Petroleum Engineers Development. Companies were contacted and the response was overwhelming: almost none dropped the opportunity to "join the club" to support the professional/carrier development of young professionals, and to attract them in the SPE world. With a solid financial basis, STYPED organizes a package of events meant for Young O&G Professional. STYPED has its own Board which works in cooperation with the SPE Italian Section Board of Directors and has active contacts with similar initiatives throughout the world.

What STYPED does

Our activitiy consists in the organization of a series of INITIATIVES and in the pubblication of the JOURNAL

2003-2004
The current season of events is now going to an end. It saw an upgrading of what done before. The Continuous Education Program was started and 5 short lecture mostly focused on technical issues were given by worldwide recognized experts to young professional. 2 non-technical workshops were organized in nice and inspiring locations (Lenna and Piacenza) with the formula of “shuttle service, one day out and lunch”. Also a Season Closure Social Event was arranged in a Club in Milano which involved more than 150 Young Professionals. It was the first such an event and the enthusiasm collected was huge. Moreover 5 issues of the STYPED Journal were edited over the 2003-2004 period with feedbacks of the activity and a good number of interesting technical articles.

2002-2003
During the 2002-2003 season 4 Workshops were organized in San Donato Milanese facing non-technical topics (soft-skills). The 2002-2003 season also saw the birth of the STYPED Journal, which has been thought as an addendum to the SPE bulletin. Its goal was to be a permanent initiative for the expression and divulgation of the STYPED activities.

WHAT NEXT
Next season we want to continue our growth keeping our programs active (Workshops, Continuous Education and Journal) and pushing towards new frontiers: Networking with the Universities and active participation to the SPE Young Engineers International Programs. About the University Networking in the view of the “reinforcing cycle of knowledge”, meetings are going to be scheduled were young professionals will share their experience with the students who are to become young professionals soon. About the International Programs, recently two important initiatives have been launched: the Young Exploration and Production Professionals’ Professional Network and the International Bulletin… we’ll be part of them!
